Danaus Ecocenter is a Biological Reserve that develop conservation programs and environmental education, reason why, when it comes to joining this tour, you’ll experience a very educational and amusing adventure. Here, you´ll enjoy a guided 600 meters long trail through secondary forest where you can see a wide variety of plants and animals. For example, this Biological Reserve contains over 60 species of medicinal plants labeled!
On the other hand, there can be found about 150 species of birds, two and three toed sloths, the poisonous red frog, the red-eyed tree frog, caymans and more. This reserve also has another 350 meters long trail, whose purpose is to illustrate the natural regeneration process of the forest. This Ecocenter is also committed with the preservation of the Maleku indigenous community, so you can visit the interesting Maleku Cultural House they built to let others understand the value of this tribe.
One of the main attractions of the place is the butterflies farm, which includes a special site for the display of larvae, pupae and eggs, turning this place into the ideal for learning about the metamorphosis phenomenon. With a laborious work, Danaus Ecocenter have reproduced about 30 different species of butterflies over the years. This Biological Reserve also protects a natural water spring which is another major component of Ecocenter. Thanks to the presence of this hidric resource, you’ll get to observe waterfowls, alligators and iguanas. In fact, Danaus is home to hundreds of species and has been documented by the universities UNA and UNED, as a nationally important site for aquatic bird’s nesting season.

Danaus Ecocenter Arrival
Hike starts upon arriving at Danaus Ecocenter Biological Reserve -about 30 minutes after the pick up-. After a quick check in you can visit the restrooms and get prepared for a 3 hours adventure.
Back to La Fortuna, we’ll drive for about 30 minutes back to your hotel. “Hasta luego”!
